The Icelandic government continues to promote digital adoption, enhancing internet infrastructure and encouraging digital media consumption. These initiatives aim to support the growing digital media market and address challenges faced by traditional media forms.
Traditional media formats face challenges, particularly in advertising revenue. In November 2024, advertising expenditures in Icelandic media decreased by 10 per cent, with nearly half of advertising funds directed to foreign media outlets
In March 2024, the Icelandic Parliament passed the Media Law Amendment Act (38/2011). The amendment prohibits the use of children’s personal data, whether collected or generated by media providers, for commercial use such as direct marketing or personalised advertising. The new law also stipulates that any violations related to personal data processing will be governed by the GDPR. Oversight and enforcement of sanctions will be managed by the Icelandic Data Protection Authority. The law became effective with immediate effect with oversight and enforcement of sanctions managed by the Icelandic Data Protection Authority.
The Icelandic Data Protection Authority has remained proactive, issuing several guidelines to ensure compliance with GDPR. These guidelines provide clarity on data processing activities, reinforcing Iceland's dedication to robust data protection standard.
