Norway’s media market has been influenced by strategic acquisitions over the past year, as well as technological innovation and significant regulatory changes.
In February 2025, Telia Company agreed to sell its television and media division to Schibsted Media for approximately USD615 million. This transaction includes brands TV4 and MTV in Sweden and Finland, and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025. The sale aligns with Telia's strategy to focus on core connectivity services in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
In January 2025, amendments to the Norwegian Electronic Communications Act came into effect, introducing stricter regulations on obtaining user consent for cookies and online tracking technologies. The updated law mandates that consent be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous, eliminating previous practices such as pre-ticked boxes. Businesses must now implement clear consent management platforms and update privacy policies to comply with these standards.
Other developments include the Norwegian government’s proposal to raise the minimum age for social media usage from 13 to 15. This initiative is intended to better protect children from harmful content and the influence of algorithms. The proposal includes amending the Personal Data Act to enforce the new age restriction and developing robust age verification systems.
The Norwegian media industry has had a clear shift from traditional channels to digital platforms, in line with global trends. Revenue in the country’s media market is projected to reach approximately USD6.26 billion in 2025, with television and video being the largest segment.
Artificial intelligence has been increasingly integrated into newsrooms for content production, analytics, and personalization, with ethical AI use becoming a focus of industry discussions.
Data privacy compliance has remained stringent under Norway's implementation of GDPR, influencing how media companies collect and use audience data.
