Leading streaming platforms including Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix, and local player Vidio have significantly increased investment in Indonesian-language original content, particularly targeting stories from beyond Jakarta to appeal to the country's diverse regional audiences.
Social media and digital platforms have further consolidated their position as primary content distribution channels. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube have become increasingly central to media consumption, with traditional media companies developing platform-specific content strategies to reach Indonesia's digitally engaged population.
In transactional trends, MD Entertainment acquired a 60.98 per cent stare in NET TV, leading to significant changes in the company's leadership and a subsequent rebranding to MDTV in February 2025. This acquisition represents the trend of consolidation within Indonesia's media sector as companies seek to strengthen their market positions in a competitive industry.
Amid global trends towards stricter digital content regulation for younger audiences, Indonesian authorities are considering implementing regulations similar to Australia's proposed social media ban for children under 16 to protect minors from online gambling advertisements and other potential harm.
