There has been an increase in digital news consumption in Tanzania, driven by mobile internet usage, though challenges to media freedom persist under the current administration.
In October 2024, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority suspended the online platforms of Mwananchi Communications Ltd for 30 days due to content deemed harmful to national unity, raising concerns about press freedom. The suspension was enforced under the Electronic and Postal Communications (Online Content) Regulations of 2020, and affected platforms including The Citizen, Mwananchi Digital and Mwanaspoti.
The suspension highlighted the delicate balance between maintaining national unity and upholding press freedom, underscoring ongoing debates about censorship and freedom of expression in Tanzania.
In related developments, the regulatory authority granted 38 new licenses across sectors between July and September 2024. These include one license each for Network Facilities and Network Services, four for Application Services, 15 for Content Services and five for Courier Services.
In August 2024, the Tanzanian government granted British actor and producer Idris Elba approval to establish a film studio in Zanzibar, marking a significant step toward enhancing the country's film industry. Plans by international figures, such as actor Mr Elba, reflect the country's growing appeal as a hub for film production.
